MALT-protected since 1993, Black Mountain is one of the most recognizable landmarks in West Marin, rising above the town of Point Reyes Station. The ranch is a model for agricultural diversification supporting a variety of operations on the ranch, including cattle, sheep, alpacas, lavender – managed by ranchers and producers dedicated to protecting the natural resources that allow their operations to thrive.

The hike is a challenging six-mile round-trip hike, with 1200 feet of elevation gain to the summit, steep in places, and exposed to wind, sun, or rain, but with beauty around every turn.

Prefer a shorter hike? Hike as much or as little as you’d like, then settle in for a picnic on the grounds, relax at the ranch’s newly renovated three-story barn, say hello to the resident animals, and cool off with free Straus ice cream (while supplies last). Along the way, you’ll learn more about the agricultural operations and the community that owner Marcel Houtzager has built at Black Mountain Ranch.

And feel free to bring a friend or two with you – the more, the merrier!

Hikes like these are made possible by supporters like you. If you would like to contribute to more experiences like these, we suggest a donation of $30.
