Old Style Cheddar is a return to the roots of American cheesemaking—a cheese born from patience, tradition, and respect for time-honored methods. Crafted in rural southeast Iowa at Milton Creamery, this cheddar reflects the way cheese was made before shortcuts, additives, and rushed aging became common. It exists because the cheesemakers believed there was still a place for a truly honest cheddar—one that lets milk, culture, and time do the work.
How It Came to Be
Old Style Cheddar was developed to honor classic Midwestern cheddar styles that once defined local creameries across the countryside. This cheese made in small batches, stirred and cheddared by hand, pressed slowly, and aged naturally—without flash or gimmicks. Milton Creamery preserves that heritage, creating a cheddar that tastes familiar yet increasingly rare in today’s marketplace.
This cheese is intentionally uncomplicated in its ingredients, but deeply complex in its craftsmanship. Every step—from curd handling to aging—is designed to coax flavor naturally, rather than force it.
What Makes It Unique
Old Style Cheddar stands apart because it is balanced, approachable, and authentic. It isn’t overly sharp or aggressively aged, yet it delivers a depth of flavor that only comes from careful aging and high-quality milk. The texture is firm and smooth with a slight crumble, signaling proper cheddar development without dryness.
This is a cheddar meant to be eaten often, shared generously, and enjoyed in everyday moments—on the table, not locked away for special occasions. Old Style is the base for our flavored cheeses.
